Anthropic launched inference hooks in beta on August 5, 2026 — a feature for Claude Enterprise that routes every employee prompt through the organisation’s own security server for an allow-or-deny decision before Claude processes the message. The feature closes the compliance gap that left enterprise AI chat outside the data-loss-prevention (DLP) controls applied to email, web traffic, and file transfers.

How Claude Enterprise Inference Hooks Work

When an employee submits a prompt in Claude Enterprise chat, Claude Code, or Claude Cowork, the inference hook sends a signed HTTPS POST of the conversation transcript to the organisation’s configured DLP server. The server returns an allow or deny verdict within a 5-second timeout. If the server does not respond in time, Claude falls back to a configurable default — allow or deny — set by the organisation’s IT team.

Configuration operates at the organisation level, not per user or per surface. Admins can also enable shadow mode, which processes all prompts but always allows them, giving compliance teams a measurement window to assess what share of prompts would have been blocked before committing to enforcement. Role-based exclusions and percentage-based rollouts let teams phase adoption without disrupting all employees simultaneously.

Which DLP Vendors Are Supported at Launch

Anthropic integrated inference hooks with four DLP vendors at launch: Netskope, Palo Alto Networks, Zscaler, and Proofpoint. Proofpoint’s integration is already publicly documented, indicating the vendor partnerships were arranged before the August 5 announcement. Organisations with custom security infrastructure can also connect a proprietary server using the published webhook schema — no dependency on one of the four named vendors.

The Compliance Gap Inference Hooks Address

Enterprise AI adoption created a coverage gap: employees submit sensitive customer data, source-code secrets, and personally identifiable information (PII) to AI chat interfaces that sit outside the established DLP stack. Email, web proxies, and file-transfer systems are typically covered; AI chat was not. Claude Enterprise previously offered only after-the-fact logging. Inference hooks add a synchronous gatekeeper, meaning the DLP policy the compliance team already wrote for email now also applies to AI sessions.

The announcement arrived three days after the EU AI Act’s high-risk AI system provisions became enforceable on August 2, 2026, which require organisations using AI in certain business-critical contexts to demonstrate oversight and logging. According to Anthropic, the feature is currently in beta — it is not yet generally available.

What This Means for Enterprise AI Adoption

Inference hooks change the compliance calculus for organisations in finance, healthcare, and legal sectors that previously rejected AI chat on data-leakage grounds. The architecture uses the organisation’s existing DLP investment — no new vendor relationship or policy ruleset is required. This is the first time a frontier model provider has given third-party security vendors a real-time hook inside the inference path of a production AI system.

Anthropic’s positioning here is clear: Claude Enterprise is the AI tool that plugs into what IT already owns, rather than asking IT to trust a new black box. OpenAI and Google have not announced equivalent real-time inference-level DLP hooks as of the August 5 launch.

Our Take: By inserting Netskope, Zscaler, Palo Alto, and Proofpoint directly into Claude’s inference path, Anthropic has made enterprise compliance a structural competitive advantage — not a checkbox. For IT teams already running those DLP stacks, Claude Enterprise just became the lowest-friction AI deployment in the regulated-industry category. OpenAI and Google need a substantive answer to this.
