Microsoft announced the rollout in Message Center notice MC1442234, citing invoice processing, request triage, RFP response, and SLA breach escalation as the launch use cases. The designer adds a dedicated agent node that reasons over unstructured inputs — emails, documents, and requests — and decides the next action, replacing the rule-based branching that previously required a developer.

What the New Workflow Designer Does

The workflow designer is a drag-and-drop canvas inside Copilot Studio where makers assemble multi-step business automations from nodes, including the new agent node. The canvas supports node testing, variation view with versioning, variable folding, and inline notes. According to Microsoft’s announcement: “This feature lets organizations move beyond rule-based automation to agentic workflows that reason over unstructured inputs (emails, documents, and requests) and decide the next best action.”

The runtime supports long-running, goal-seeking agents with human-in-the-loop patterns, such as approval steps and refinement loops. A workflow can pause for a manager’s sign-off before an agent sends an RFP response, then resume automatically.

How Agent Nodes Differ From Rule-Based Automation

Agent nodes replace conditional logic with reasoning. The previous automation model was deterministic — makers wrote explicit branches for every case, and unstructured inputs such as email threads or attached invoices broke the flow. An agent node instead classifies incoming content, extracts the relevant fields, validates them, and picks the next action from a knowledge base. Agents in the new harness invoke Opus 5, Fable, and GPT-5.6 for advanced reasoning steps, and the runtime separates thinking from execution so multi-step runs stay stable. Microsoft describes the orchestration as credit-efficient: model compute is charged where it adds value, not on every step. Microsoft has published no specific per-run or per-credit pricing.

Native Microsoft 365 Data Access Sets It Apart

Agents built in the designer connect natively to SharePoint, Outlook, Teams, Dataverse, Planner, and the Microsoft 365 Researcher agent. Microsoft IQ supplies agents with email, calendar, file, and Teams context, so an invoice-triage agent reads the vendor thread and the attached document without connectors or sync delays. Competing workflow builders, such as n8n and Notion’s agent features, reach that data only through third-party connectors — an advantage that disappears entirely for businesses running outside Microsoft 365.
