Demis Hassabis stepped down as CEO of Google DeepMind on August 5–6, 2026, moving to Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, while Jeff Dean — a 27-year Google veteran and co-founder of Google Brain — departs to co-found an AI research startup called Discovery Loop. Koray Kavukcuoglu, formerly DeepMind’s CTO and Alphabet’s Chief AI Architect, takes over as SVP of Google DeepMind. Alphabet shares fell approximately 4% following the announcement.

What Changed at Google DeepMind on August 5, 2026?

Google DeepMind announced 4 simultaneous leadership changes: Hassabis exits the CEO role, becoming Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet while continuing to lead Isomorphic Labs; Kavukcuoglu is named SVP; Dean departs; and 3 additional senior researchers leave alongside Dean for Discovery Loop. Those 3 are Sanjay Ghemawat (Google Senior Fellow), Oriol Vinyals (DeepMind VP), and Quoc Le (Google Brain co-founder). Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced the changes, stating: “Jeff and Google Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat are launching an independent public benefit corporation to accelerate discoveries in ML, science, and engineering.” Semafor reported Hassabis had been stepping back from CEO duties for approximately one year before the formal announcement.

Who Is Koray Kavukcuoglu, Google DeepMind’s New SVP?

Koray Kavukcuoglu is DeepMind’s former CTO and Alphabet’s Chief AI Architect, now appointed SVP of Google DeepMind with oversight of Gemini model development, Frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams. Kavukcuoglu reports directly to Pichai — not through Hassabis — placing him in direct command of Google’s most commercially critical AI products. His prior role as Alphabet’s Chief AI Architect means he has already shaped cross-product AI strategy; his new role requires him to execute it while rebuilding a depleted technical leadership team.

What Does This Mean for Gemini 3.5 Pro’s Timeline?

Gemini 3.5 Pro remains unreleased as of August 2026, originally expected to launch in June 2026. The delay now spans at least 2 months. The Gemini project has lost 2 of its technical co-leads during this period: Noam Shazeer, who sources report has moved to OpenAI (unverified by sources available to WithO2), and a second co-lead who departed the day Kavukcuoglu was appointed to lead Gemini 4 development. No source has reported that Gemini 3.5 Pro has been cancelled — sources describe the model as delayed, not scrapped. For the full pre-announcement coverage of what the model was expected to deliver, see Gemini 3.5 Pro: every detail before the expected launch.

What Does the Google AI Leadership Shakeup Mean for Businesses Using Gemini?

Businesses that have built workflows on Google Vertex AI, the Gemini API, or Workspace AI features face heightened platform uncertainty: the core team that designed these products is fragmenting simultaneously. Jeff Dean co-invented Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), co-created TensorFlow, and built the distributed systems that underpin Google Search and AI infrastructure — institutional knowledge of that depth does not transfer in a quarterly transition. Hassabis co-founded DeepMind in 2010 and drove the AlphaFold breakthroughs that established DeepMind’s credibility; his move to a research-advisory role shifts DeepMind’s founding scientific leadership away from day-to-day product decisions.

For decision-makers currently evaluating AI tools for their business, this shakeup adds a concrete question to the vendor selection framework: does Google’s AI roadmap under new leadership remain as reliable a foundation as it was 6 months ago? Google retains the infrastructure scale, cloud distribution, and Workspace integration that make Gemini compelling for enterprise buyers. Kavukcuoglu’s appointment consolidates reporting lines to Pichai and may accelerate commercial decisions. The counterargument is that replacing the researchers who built Google’s AI moat — across the Gemini team, Google Brain, and DeepMind simultaneously — takes years, not quarters. The practical hedge for businesses is maintaining tested access to competing platforms, such as Anthropic’s Claude API and OpenAI’s API, alongside any Google AI commitments, rather than committing exclusively to one vendor before Kavukcuoglu’s roadmap becomes visible.

Our Take: Google lost the scientists who built its AI moat at the same moment its flagship model is 2 months late. For businesses choosing between Gemini and competing platforms, the simultaneous departure of the CEO, a founding engineer, and 3 senior researchers is an argument to keep optionality rather than commit fully to one vendor. Kavukcuoglu’s consolidated reporting to Pichai is a structural improvement; whether it compensates for the lost institutional knowledge will become clear when Gemini 3.5 Pro either ships or doesn’t.

For Context: Today’s announcements follow a pattern of senior departures from Google’s AI division throughout 2026. WithO2 covered the earlier talent departures from Google DeepMind, which involved research staff exits. Today’s changes are categorically larger in scope: they reach the CEO, a 27-year founding engineer, and 3 additional senior researchers in a single announcement, coinciding with a delayed flagship model and a 4% drop in Alphabet’s share price.
