OpenAI’s ChatGPT advertising platform operates fully self-serve with no minimum spend as of May 5, 2026, and ads now run in 7 countries: the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea. The platform is the first large-scale AI-native ad channel open to any business — and the question for marketing budgets in 2026 is whether it deserves a test.

How ChatGPT Ads Work in 2026

ChatGPT ads are labeled “Sponsored” placements that appear beneath AI responses for Free and Go plan users; Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers see no ads. OpenAI recommends starting CPC bids of $3–5, with CPMs ranging from roughly $25 in some categories up to about $60 at launch rates, according to Context Hints’ platform guide. OpenAI excludes under-18 users and sensitive categories, such as politics and health, from ad placement.

The pricing structure has moved fast. The pilot launched February 9, 2026 with a $200,000 minimum spend, OpenAI cut the minimum to about $50,000 in April, and removed it entirely at the May 5 self-serve launch. Since May, OpenAI has shipped product feeds for shopping catalogs, custom audience uploads from email and phone lists, CPA bidding, and a Conversions API. Availability is uneven across the 7 markets: self-serve access is confirmed for US businesses, while some markets, such as Japan and South Korea, run limited access.

    What Results Are Businesses Seeing?

Early results split by objective: brand awareness performs, direct response is inconsistent. Sensor Tower’s “State of AI 2026” report recorded roughly 600% impression growth between early and mid-March 2026. Native CTR in one pilot measured about 0.91%, versus Google Search’s roughly 6.4% benchmark, per reporting by CNBC, Digiday, and Search Engine Journal. Digiday also reported one enterprise pilot spent only about 3% of a $250,000 budget in several weeks — a sign of constrained inventory and cautious pacing, not proven demand.

The CTR gap needs interpretation. ChatGPT users respond to ads inside an ongoing conversation rather than clicking away mid-task, so click-based attribution undercounts the placement’s influence. Early agency launch partners — Omnicom, WPP, Dentsu, Publicis, Adobe, Criteo, Kargo, Pacvue, and StackAdapt — signal that large ad buyers treat the channel as strategic despite the thin conversion data.

Should Your Business Buy ChatGPT Ads?

ChatGPT ads suit e-commerce brands and awareness-focused advertisers today, and remain premature for direct-response advertisers who need Google-level ROAS consistency. The decision breaks down by business type:

    • E-commerce brands get the strongest case: product feeds and shopping ads went live in 2026, and a small test budget carries no minimum-spend risk.
    • B2B SaaS companies face low CTRs but reach high-intent, AI-literate users actively asking which tools to adopt.
    • Brands building AI-era awareness gain visibility at the exact moment users ask “what tool should I use?” — a placement no other channel offers.
    • Direct-response advertisers accustomed to Google ROAS get inconsistent results; ChatGPT ads are not a Google Ads replacement in 2026.

The competitive context favors early testing: Google’s AI Overviews carries ads and Microsoft Copilot is testing them, but ChatGPT remains the highest-traffic consumer AI app and therefore the highest-reach AI ad channel. Advertisers weighing where AI budgets go can compare ChatGPT’s growing product ecosystem against rivals before committing spend.

Our Take: ChatGPT ads aren’t a Google killer — yet. But for brands that want to be visible when AI users ask “what tool should I use for X?”, buying presence in ChatGPT is the 2026 equivalent of claiming your Google Maps listing in 2010: cheap now, competitive soon.

For Context: OpenAI’s Reversal on Advertising

OpenAI’s move into advertising reverses CEO Sam Altman’s stated position. “[Advertising] somewhat fundamentally misaligns a user’s incentives with the company providing the service,” Altman said at a Harvard talk in May 2024, before the company launched its ad pilot in February 2026. The tension is real elsewhere: Perplexity discontinued its own ad program in February 2026, with an executive explaining that “once ads appear, users inevitably begin to second-guess” answer integrity. OpenAI is betting its scale absorbs that trust cost — the same scale strategy behind OpenAI’s latest GPT-5.6 models. On July 9, 2026, OpenAI announced a shift to a static ad format, a further step toward conventional ad-industry norms.

    FAQ

How much do ChatGPT ads cost in 2026?

OpenAI recommends starting CPC bids of $3–5, with CPMs from roughly $25 to $60 depending on category. There is no minimum spend since the May 5, 2026 self-serve launch, so businesses set their own test budgets.

    Who sees ads in ChatGPT?

Only Free and Go plan users see ads, displayed as labeled “Sponsored” placements beneath AI responses. Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers see no ads, and OpenAI excludes under-18 users and sensitive categories such as politics and health.

    Which countries have ChatGPT ads?

ChatGPT ads run in 7 countries: the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea. Self-serve access is confirmed for US businesses; some markets, such as Japan and South Korea, operate under limited access.

Are ChatGPT ads better than Google Ads?

No, not for direct response in 2026: pilot CTR measured about 0.91% versus Google Search’s roughly 6.4% benchmark, and conversion results are inconsistent. ChatGPT ads currently work best for brand awareness and e-commerce testing alongside — not instead of — Google Ads.
