OpenAI Buys NextSlide: Slide Decks Are Now a ChatGPT Feature

OpenAI acquired NextSlide, a startup that converts prompts, notes, documents, and research into polished, editable slide decks, with the deal publicly disclosed on August 8, 2026. Founder Ahmed Beshry and the entire NextSlide team have joined OpenAI to build presentation creation natively into ChatGPT — a product used by 2 million businesses already using ChatGPT for writing, research, and summarization. Financial terms were not disclosed.

    What NextSlide Does

NextSlide’s product takes a text prompt, a set of notes, a document, or a body of research and generates a complete, editable presentation without requiring the user to open a separate slide application. According to Beshry’s own description of the product — reported by TechCrunch — the tool produces “polished, editable” decks from those inputs.

The NextSlide deal is OpenAI’s 17th acquisition in three years and its sixth closing in 2026. Beshry previously co-founded Caper AI, a smart-cart and cashierless-checkout startup that Instacart acquired for $350 million in 2021. That acquisition history signals OpenAI is bringing in proven product operators to build out ChatGPT, not just acquiring technology teams.

Why This Matters for Business Users of ChatGPT

Until the NextSlide acquisition, ChatGPT’s business users could write, research, and summarize inside one tool — but generating the actual presentation required switching to a separate product. The NextSlide integration closes that gap: a user will be able to move from a research document or meeting notes directly to a finished slide deck inside a single ChatGPT session, with no app-switching.

No ship date for the presentation feature has been confirmed by OpenAI. Whether the feature will be available to all ChatGPT subscribers or restricted to paid tiers has not been disclosed.

How ChatGPT’s Presentation Feature Stacks Up Against Competitors

ChatGPT’s move into slide creation enters a market where four other AI platforms already operate:

    • Microsoft Copilot builds presentations natively inside PowerPoint, with context drawn from emails, documents, and meetings across Microsoft 365.
    • Google Gemini generates slide decks inside Google Slides and shares workspace context with Gmail and Google Docs.
    • Gamma and Canva AI built presentation generation as standalone products from the ground up — both now compete with a capability that may ship inside a tool their users already pay for.
    • Anthropic launched Claude Design in April 2026, targeting the $60 billion design and presentation market with decks, prototypes, and one-pagers built directly in Claude.

For business teams comparing AI writing tools, the acquisition shifts the value calculation. An all-in-one ChatGPT subscription covering content creation, research, and deck production becomes a direct argument against maintaining a separate Gamma or Canva AI account.

For Context: OpenAI’s 2026 Business Expansion

The NextSlide deal is the latest in a pattern of OpenAI acquiring tools that fill gaps in ChatGPT’s product surface — covering coding, memory, voice, and now presentations in quick succession.

    • OpenAI’s enterprise AI platform — how the Presence platform automates 75% of enterprise support interactions.
    • OpenAI’s business expansion into identity — Sign in with ChatGPT positions OpenAI as a business login provider alongside Google and Microsoft.
    • ChatGPT’s expanding business features — the ad network rollout that opened ChatGPT to paid business campaigns across seven countries.

Our Take: ChatGPT becoming a one-stop shop for office work — write, research, present — is good news for heavy ChatGPT users but bad news for Gamma and Canva AI, who are now competing with a tool their customers already pay for.
