Google officially renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook on July 16, 2026, adding a secure cloud computer for AI Ultra subscribers, native code execution for data analysis, and cross-app access inside the Gemini app — upgrades that move the product from a niche research tool into direct competition with Perplexity Pro and ChatGPT deep research.

Josh Woodward, VP of Google Labs, announced the rebrand on the official Google blog. The product retains its defining capability — ingesting documents, YouTube videos, and web pages as sources, then answering questions without hallucinating beyond those sources — but now carries the Gemini brand and a deeper integration stack. The rename follows Google’s established playbook: Bard became Gemini; Google Duplex became Gemini Live; NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook. According to SiliconAngle, the product is used by 30 million people and more than 600,000 organizations.

What Actually Changed With the Rebrand

The rebrand ships three functional changes, not a cosmetic rename alone.

Secure Cloud Computer (AI Ultra tier): AI Ultra subscribers can direct Gemini Notebook to use a Google-owned cloud computer to autonomously browse the web, conduct research, write content, and execute code — without the task running on the user’s device. This directly competes with Perplexity Pro’s deep-research agent and ChatGPT’s Operator mode for autonomous research workflows.

Code execution for data analysis (AI Pro): Pro subscribers will soon be able to run Python code natively inside notebooks, analyzing spreadsheets and processing datasets without exporting to a separate tool. Google has not confirmed an exact rollout date for this feature.

Cross-app Gemini sync: Notebooks are now accessible directly inside the Gemini app, so users can open, edit, and query notebooks from the same interface they use for Gemini chat. Google also confirmed that notebooks will appear inside AI Mode in Search — described as “coming soon” in the official announcement. The visual identity updated to the blue-purple Gemini gradient, replacing the NotebookLM purple notebook icon.

What This Means for Business Users

For teams currently evaluating AI tools for business research and analysis workflows, Gemini Notebook with an AI Pro subscription is now a credible alternative to Perplexity Pro for document-grounded research. The code execution feature extends its relevance to data analysts who previously needed to move data into Python or Excel after querying in NotebookLM.

The secure cloud computer positions the Ultra tier alongside agentic research tools from OpenAI and Perplexity — though independent benchmarks comparing its autonomous research performance have not yet been published. Pricing has not changed. No data migration is required; existing notebooks and Audio Overview podcasts carry over automatically.

Gemini Notebook is one of several AI subscription products business teams are comparing in 2026. Our breakdown of the best AI subscription in 2026 — ChatGPT vs Claude vs Google covers where each product fits depending on use case and budget.

For context: Google has been expanding the Gemini product line throughout 2026. Our earlier coverage of Gemini 3.5 Pro and the underlying model updates tracks the model improvements that now power Gemini Notebook’s new capabilities.

Our Take: The rebrand is window dressing. What matters is the secure cloud computer — Google is quietly turning Gemini Notebook into a deep-research agent embedded inside a product that 600,000 organizations already use. If the autonomous research mode performs on par with Perplexity Pro’s deep research, Gemini Notebook at the Ultra tier becomes a serious enterprise alternative without requiring users to adopt a new tool. The Search integration is the sleeper feature: notebooks appearing inside AI Mode puts source-cited, grounded research one step closer to every Google query.
