Shopify is migrating all mobile apps from React Native back to platform-native Swift and Kotlin. The company announced the move citing AI coding agents that now make building the same feature twice — once for iOS, once for Android — cheaper than maintaining a single shared codebase.

    What Shopify Changed and Why

Shopify adopted React Native in 2017 and expanded the strategy in 2020 under the premise that one shared codebase reduces engineering cost. Shopify’s engineering blog published the reversal announcement on September 10, 2026. According to that post, the premise inverted in late 2025 when AI coding agents reached a capability threshold: “It’s cheaper to build the same feature in Swift and Kotlin — twice — than it is to maintain a shared codebase.”

The specific agent doing this work is Shopify’s internal “Pi” coding agent, extended with four specialized subagents: one that inspects existing React Native source, one that documents current behavior, one that prepares platform-specific implementation plans, and one that reviews feature parity after migration. Shopify published the Pi migration workflow as a reusable extension for other engineering teams inside the company.

How the Shop App Migration Ran

Shopify ran a pilot migration of the Shop app — its consumer shopping assistant — before committing the full fleet. The Shop app went from proof-of-concept to App Store submission in 12 weeks. According to Shopify’s engineering blog, the crash rate dropped 90% after the migration to native Swift and Kotlin.

The main Shopify app migration is now underway. That app contains more than 300 screens plus home and lock-screen widgets, an Apple Watch app, and Siri Shortcuts integrations. Shopify has not published a timeline for completion of the full fleet.

What the Reversal Means for Businesses Comparing Ecommerce Platforms

For merchants evaluating which platform to build on, the migration carries three concrete quality implications.

Performance: Native Swift and Kotlin compile directly to platform machine code without a JavaScript bridge. Apps that previously routed interactions through React Native’s bridge layer now run at native frame rates on both iOS and Android.

OS integrations: Shopify’s roadmap explicitly includes home-screen widgets, Apple Watch support, and Siri Shortcuts — capabilities that require native APIs and are significantly harder to ship through a cross-platform framework. Merchants whose customers interact with Shopify’s consumer apps gain access to those surfaces.

Crash reduction: The 90% crash reduction in the Shop app is a direct reliability improvement for end consumers. A more stable app produces fewer abandoned sessions, which affects merchants’ conversion metrics on that surface.

The Broader Signal for AI Coding Agents

Shopify’s decision is an empirical data point about what AI coding agents can now accomplish on large-scale software migrations. Rebuilding 300+ screens from one language to two — with automated inspection, documentation, translation, and parity review — would have taken years with human-only labor. Shopify completed the pilot phase in 12 weeks.

According to Shopify’s engineering blog, the determining factor was agent capability crossing a cost threshold: “Agents can now do enough of the implementation, translation, testing, and review work that it’s no longer the deciding factor it was in 2020.”

Flutter teams, Meta (which maintains React Native), and Expo-based development shops are now looking at a competitor who rebuilt 300 screens in weeks and reported a 90% crash reduction. The competitive pressure is on teams that still justify cross-platform frameworks primarily on labor cost grounds — that argument depends on AI agent capability remaining low, and Shopify has just published evidence that it is not.

    Our Take

AI coding agents have changed the cost structure of software development at scale. Shopify’s move is not a statement that React Native is a bad framework; it is a statement that the economics of native development changed when AI agents absorbed the implementation, translation, and review labor. For business buyers choosing between ecommerce platforms, the takeaway is direct: Shopify is using AI agents to accelerate native quality improvements that platforms still locked into shared codebases cannot match at this speed. That gap compounds over every release cycle.
