Amazon will permanently shut down Mechanical Turk — its 21-year-old crowdsourced labor marketplace — on September 30, 2026, along with SageMaker Ground Truth and Amazon Augmented AI on the same date. CNBC confirmed the closure on August 25, 2026. Amazon had already stopped accepting new customers on MTurk as of July 3, 2026.

Amazon cited “internal assessment of its programs and services” as the stated reason for the shutdown. The closure ends Amazon’s involvement in human data-collection infrastructure entirely — the company is exiting the market, not retiring a single product, per The Next Web.

    What Was Mechanical Turk?

Mechanical Turk launched in 2005 as Amazon’s marketplace for Human Intelligence Tasks (HITs) — small digital jobs including image labeling, audio transcription, and survey completion. Jeff Bezos described the service as “artificial artificial intelligence” — humans performing tasks that computers of the era could not handle reliably. At its peak, MTurk served more than 500,000 workers globally. Throughout the 2010s, it served as a primary pipeline for AI training data: most major AI systems trained during that decade used MTurk-labeled data at some stage of development.

Why Amazon Is Shutting It Down

MTurk was in decline before the shutdown announcement. Specialist data-labeling platforms — Scale AI, Mercor, and Prolific — drew workers and clients away from MTurk by offering higher-quality labeled data and better tooling. Amazon determined it could not invest enough to compete in a market that had been reshaped by synthetic data generation and specialist labeling workflows, and chose to exit entirely.

The deeper structural cause is the one MTurk helped create: the AI systems it helped train now outperform crowd workers at most of the tasks MTurk was built for. Image classification, text annotation, and audio transcription — the core HITs — are tasks where modern AI automation operates faster and at lower marginal cost than human microworkers. Amazon’s “internal assessment” reflects that economic reality directly.

What Business Teams Need to Know Before September 30

Any organization running surveys, data-labeling jobs, or AI training pipelines through MTurk must migrate before September 30, 2026. Scale AI, Prolific, and Appen are the named alternative platforms. SageMaker Ground Truth — Amazon’s managed data-labeling service that integrated with MTurk — also closes on that date, so AWS customers using it face the same hard deadline. Academic researchers and AI trainers who relied on MTurk for study participants or annotation workers are equally affected.

For teams evaluating AI automation tools, the closure signals an inflection in the market: Amazon no longer sees a viable business in human-in-the-loop microwork at scale. Many former MTurk use cases — content classification, data cleaning, sentiment annotation — are now handled by automated pipelines, and AI agents replacing manual tasks have absorbed most of the low-complexity, high-volume work MTurk specialized in.

    For Context

MTurk’s closure is part of a broader pattern: AI systems trained on crowd-labeled data are now replacing the crowd-labeling market that trained them. Specialist platforms have claimed the higher-skill labeling work. Synthetic data generation has reduced demand for human-labeled datasets at the lower end. The middle market MTurk occupied — general-purpose human microwork at scale — has effectively collapsed between these two forces.

    Our Take

MTurk closing is AI’s “Kodak moment” for crowdsourced microwork — the technology it helped train made it obsolete. Any business still designing workflows around human crowd tasks should treat September 30 as the migration deadline.
