Google launched Gemini Enterprise for Legal on August 25, 2026 — a specialized AI agent platform that handles contract review, legal research, regulatory monitoring, and document preparation for law firms with limited human oversight. Four major firms — Weil Gotshal, Cleary Gottlieb, Freshfields, and Williams & Connolly — are already collaborating on the platform, which connects directly with Thomson Reuters (Westlaw), Harvey, and Legora. The launch is the first major vertical specialization of Gemini Enterprise, which Google introduced as a general business platform in October 2025.

What Gemini Enterprise for Legal Does

Gemini Enterprise for Legal deploys AI agents across four core legal workflows: contract review, regulatory monitoring, legal research, and document preparation. According to Google’s official statement, the platform is designed to “help law firms use AI to manage routine and complex work to allow lawyers to focus on higher-value services, while keeping their data secure and confidential.” Amrita Mehrok, Google Cloud’s product director for the platform, stated it is “flexible for law firms, allowing them to choose among AI models embedded in the platform.”

The platform integrates with three specialized legal data systems: Thomson Reuters’s Westlaw legal database, Harvey (the AI legal research platform), and Legora. Document management company iManage also announced an integration with Gemini Enterprise for Legal on the same day, targeting enterprise workflow automation. Google confirmed the platform connects into Google Cloud Agentspace and Vertex AI, the same infrastructure introduced at Google Cloud Next 2026.

Which Law Firms Are Using It — and Why

All four collaborating law firms named in Google’s announcement are major global practices, not small early adopters. Jonathon Soler, co-managing partner of Weil Gotshal, stated: “Clients increasingly expect their lawyers to be using AI and taking advantage of its efficiencies.” Jeffrey Karpf, managing partner of Cleary Gottlieb, said the firm wants to “be involved in the creation of useful tools for law firms deploying AI.” A 2026 Deloitte report cited in the announcement describes the legal sector’s AI investment as “a transformation still in early stages.”

The platform appears to be in collaboration and early-access status with named firms, not broadly available. No pricing has been published.

What This Signals for Business AI Tool Buyers Beyond Law Firms

Gemini Enterprise for Legal is one of the clearest enterprise deployments yet of agentic AI — AI agents executing multi-step workflows in a regulated, high-stakes environment with minimal human intervention. Google announced Gemini Enterprise for Financial Services on the same day, August 25, with more verticals planned. This matches the broader trend of enterprise AI agent adoption, which has tripled in a year according to Salesforce data.

The legal vertical is competitive. Microsoft Copilot is embedded in law firm M365 workflows. Harvey, which is both a Gemini connector and an independent AI legal platform, competes directly for the same contract-review use case. Thomson Reuters launched its own proprietary “Thomson 1.0” LLM — trained on Westlaw’s own legal content — on August 24, the day before Google’s announcement. For businesses evaluating AI agents for professional workflows, the legal sector is now a leading indicator for what specialized agentic AI looks like in practice.

The broader enterprise AI agent picture is not uniformly positive: data shows 99% of enterprise AI agent projects are planned, but only 10% ship. Vertical specialization — the approach Google is taking — is one proposed remedy, reducing the configuration burden that kills generic agent deployments.

    Our Take

Google is locking professional sectors into its AI ecosystem before Microsoft consolidates them — law firms that build Gemini-dependent workflows now face real switching costs later. For businesses outside legal, the signal is clear: vertical AI agents that handle entire task categories, not just assist with them, are becoming the standard expectation in professional services. Gemini Enterprise for Legal is the most fully deployed example yet of that pattern.
