Google’s Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol formally joined the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) on August 20, 2026, placing A2A under the same vendor-neutral governance that already stewards Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP). AAIF operates on Linux Foundation infrastructure and has grown from fewer than 40 member organizations at its December 2025 launch to more than 250 members, including AWS, Anthropic, Block, Bloomberg, Cloudflare, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI. The move gives businesses two ratified open standards — A2A for agent-to-agent communication and MCP for agent-to-tool connections — under one governing body instead of two competing vendor-owned specifications.

What A2A Joining AAIF Changes for Businesses

A2A’s move to AAIF removes the single-vendor dependency that made agent interoperability a procurement risk. Before August 20, A2A belonged to Google and MCP belonged to Anthropic, so any company standardizing on both protocols placed a bet on two competitors keeping their specifications open. AAIF now holds both, under the same neutral stewardship model that governs shared infrastructure projects, such as Kubernetes, Linux, and Apache HTTP Server.

The practical outcome is a procurement question buyers can now ask directly: does this platform support A2A and MCP? That question sits alongside the ones enterprise buyers already ask about REST and OAuth support. Vendors without a published plan for AAIF standards become integration liabilities, because every connection to their agents stays bespoke and breaks on each vendor-side update.

How A2A and MCP Divide the Work

A2A and MCP cover the two connection types in any multi-agent deployment, and neither replaces the other. A2A defines how one agent discovers another agent’s capabilities and hands off a task, using structured descriptions called agent cards that publish an agent’s functions and endpoints. MCP defines how an agent reaches tools, such as databases, CRM APIs, file systems, and calendars.

A company running three agents — one for scheduling, one for CRM updates, one for email triage — uses A2A for the handoffs between those agents and MCP for each agent’s access to the underlying systems. A2A v1.0 is published, and AGENTS.md conventions for describing agent behavior are emerging alongside it. Both protocols now ship under AAIF’s specification process, which is the change that lets a buyer treat protocol support as a contractual checkbox rather than a roadmap promise. That checkbox maps directly onto the platform comparison in our guide to the 12 Best AI Agents for Business Tasks, where cross-vendor handoff is the capability that separates single-app assistants from real multi-agent deployments.

What Shipped Alongside the AAIF Ratification

Two enterprise agent releases landed in the same week as A2A’s AAIF ratification. AWS expanded Web Search in Amazon Bedrock AgentCore on August 20, 2026, adding domain filtering, published-date filtering, and availability in EU (Ireland) and Asia Pacific (Tokyo); the tool fetches live web data server-side without customer data leaving the customer’s own AWS account. Google launched the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform at Cloud Next 2026, consolidating Vertex AI and Agentspace into one enterprise agent platform.

One caution applies to the 250+ membership figure: joining AAIF is not the same as shipping A2A support. Membership signals governance participation, and buyers should verify implementation in a vendor’s documentation rather than infer it from a member list.

Our take: This is the enterprise AI equivalent of the browser standards wars ending. The useful move now is not picking a protocol winner — it is writing AAIF compliance into vendor evaluations, so the agent stack assembled in 2026 does not need re-integration in 2027.
